The Club DAB Italia is a consortium of enterprises, founded on February 1, 1996, with the intention to test innovative technologies for radio broadcasting and especially the Eureka 147 based DAB technology. The Club DAB Italia is the first consortium founded in Italy for research and experimentation of terrestrial and satellite digital radio broadcasting. Its actual members are Elemedia (Radio Deejay, Radio Capital, m2o), RDS, Radio Maria, Radio Radicale, Radio Italia Solo Musica Italiana, RIN and Radio 24 Il Sole 24 Ore. The Club DAB Italia is licensed by the Ministry of Communications for DAB experimentation in Lombardy and Piedmont, and the experimental DAB transmissions started October 8, 1998 with the simulcast of programs of the associated radio stations and PAD service from its Milan and Turin facilities. Later on a third transmission site was put into operation in order to investigate single-frequency network configuration. The Club DAB Italia is, since its foundation, associated to the World DAB Forum and plays an active role in the RSC. The Club has already hosted the World DAB Forum General Assembly in 1999 and has in the past years developed contacts and collaborations with international organisations and digital radio broadcasting platforms active in many European countries. The Club DAB Italia has taken part in the organisation of numerous events to promote the implementation and diffusion of Digital Audio Broadcasting. In the last years the Club DAB Italia has worked intensively to allow the private Italian radio broadcasters to express their potential: high quality programs, high audience levels, reliability of the broadcasting networks, political stability for the radio broadcasters in the present analogue and in the future digital era. Since 2000 the Club DAB Italia, in cooperation with RNA, has intensified its institutional activities, both at Italian and at European level. In 2001 it has played a major role in the development process by the committee for the development of the digital systems, sponsored by the Italian Authority. This process has produced in 2002 the framework or the Italian Frequency Allocation Plan for T-DAB. In 2002 the Club DAB Italia has attended and contributed to the CEPT[1] planning conference held in Maastricht. In that circumstance 7 additional DAB block have been coordinated in L-band, in addition to the 9 already coordinated in the WI95 conference. Thanks to its expertise acquired through its long term DAB trials and its involvement in the international planning process, the Club DAB Italia stands to be the most consistent candidate for DAB transmissions in Italy.
